05/20	Knoxville Zoo Mourns Death of Giraffe Knoxville Zoo is saddened to announce the death of one of its favorite animals.  Jim, a male giraffe, died on May 20.  He was 9-years-old.  Jim was born at Knoxville Zoo on November 20, 2000, and was the namesake of the zoo’s executive director, Jim Vlna. 05/18	Close Encounters of the Zoo Kind Return to Knoxville Zoo! Due to overwhelming response, Animal Encounters at Knoxville Zoo are back for the summer!  Beginning Saturday, May 23, Knoxville Zoo visitors can have a close encounter with some of the zoo’s most exciting animals.  Animal Encounters allows visitors to go behind-the-scenes to meet elephants, giraffes, penguins, rhinos or tortoises and even have the opportunity to touch or feed the animal, too. 04/27	It’s Time to “Spring” the Aldabra Tortoises at Knoxville Zoo! Spring arrives in a big way at Knoxville Zoo as Big Al, the zoo’s 120-plus-year-old Aldabra tortoise, and his buddy Tex, a “spring chicken” at more than 80-years-old, will make their annual trek to their outdoor exhibit with much fanfare at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 28. 04/06	It’s Whatever Floats Your Boat at the Cardboard Cruise Row, row, row your cardboard boat at the Cardboard Cruise benefiting Knoxville Zoo on Sunday, April 26 at the lake at Chilhowee Park. The Cardboard Cruise challenges teams of four to design and build a cardboard boat that can navigate a 250 meter course on the lake at Chilhowee Park. 03/19	Baby Meerkats Take Cuteness to a Whole New Level at Knoxville Zoo Two of Knoxville Zoo’s newest residents are making their debut this week. The meerkat babies, known as kits, are making their first foray into their exhibit under the watchful eyes of their parents. At six weeks of age, the kits are actively exploring and extremely playful. Although still nursing, they have started to forage and eat solid foods. (Complete story)

02/24	Knoxville Zoo and Seven Islands Partner for Invasive Weed Pull Knoxville Zoo and Seven Islands Wildlife Refuge are partnering to host an invasive weed pull at the refuge as part of Invasive Weed Awareness Week. This event is part of the Tennessee Exotic Pest Plant Council’s public education campaign to promote awareness of the harmful impacts of non-native, invasive plant species throughout the state. Governor Phil Bredesen has issued a state proclamation declaring Feb. 22-28, 2009, as Invasive Weed Awareness Week in Tennessee. (Complete story)

1/28	Knoxville Zoo Hatches Critically Endangered Tortoises Knoxville Zoo has become one of four Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) accredited organizations to hatch the critically endangered Burmese star tortoise.  In late 2008, the zoo’s herpetology department hatched five Burmese star tortoises with one more egg currently in incubation.
