KNOXVILLE, Tenn.-Knoxville Zoo is pleased to announce the birth and arrival of several new animals. This summer has produced a flurry of babies including the 93rd red panda cub born at Knoxville Zoo!
Also born this year were 14 naked mole rats, nine button quail, two roseate spoonbills and two Nigerian dwarf goats, named Guava and Mango.
The herpetology department is proud to announce the most hatchlings this spring including 16 ten common spider tortoises, five bog turtles, three spotted turtles, three northern spider tortoises, three spiny hill turtles, two star tortoises, one African pancake tortoise and one flat tail tortoise.
Knoxville Zoo guests also have the opportunity to see the first chimpanzee to be born at Knoxville Zoo in 20 years! Daisy chimpanzee delivered her baby, George on July 19, and is proudly carrying him around for all to see.
Other new arrivals to the zoo include a zebra from Tautphaus Zoo, in Idaho Falls, Idaho. This new addition creates a group of three zebras in Grasslands Africa! Also a male a red panda cub named Henry Ford, was transferred from Detroit Zoo to Knoxville Zoo as a result of a Species Survival Plan recommendation. He is making The Boyd Family Red Panda Village his home with Knoxville Zoo born cub, Samuel.
Guests will also not want to miss the opportunity to see the Beaver kits who just turned one-year-old and the lions who hit their second birthday this summer.
Many of these additions to the zoo can be seen on exhibit however, some will remain off exhibit until they are older. Be sure to visit soon – they grow up so fast!
Knoxville Zoo is located off exit 392A from Interstate 40 West and is open every day except Christmas Day. The zoo is nationally accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) and is committed to the highest standards in animal care and well-being, ethics, conservation, and education. Currently, the zoo is open every day from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Admission and ticket sales stop one-hour before the zoo closes.
