Knoxville Zoo Recognizes Zoo Keepers During National Zoo Keeper Week

KNOXVILLE, Tenn.- It's hard work taking care of animals big and small, but the rewards are many. The American Association of Zoo Keepers (AAZK) has recognized the hard work and dedication of zoo keepers and in return has declared July 20-26 as National Zoo Keeper Week.

AAZK recognizes that animal populations continue to decline and endangered species across the globe are in the need of immediate attention in order to prevent the threat of extinction. The organization also recognizes that zoological institutions are the key to assisting many species in their plight for survival through education, conservation and release programs.

Zoo keepers play and integral role in species survival. The job of a zoo keeper not only includes daily feeding and cleaning of the animals in their care, it also includes research studies, participation in conservation programs, and sharing their knowledge of animals and conservation with the general public. Knoxville Zoo is proud to honor its zoo keepers and supports them in the continuation of conservation research and animal care.

Knoxville Zoo Executive Director Jim Vlna added, "We are excited that AAZK has recognized the hard work and dedication of our zoo keeping staff. Their passion for animals is evident as they are making the world a better place not only for the animals at Knoxville Zoo, but also for their counterparts in the wild."

While visiting Knoxville Zoo this week, be sure to thank the zoo keepers for their tireless efforts in animal care and conservation here in Knoxville and across the globe.
